Although he was racing for the CART World Series in 2001, he had still one 3 Formula 1 Championships!
At the German Race (15/09/01) Alex Zinardi had a horrific crash after his pit stop. As he left the pit lane with cold tyres he lost control of his car running over the centre safety strip and stopped right on the racing line. Oncoming was Alex Tagliani who T-Boned him at almost 200mp/h! Both drivers were air lifted to hospital. Tagliani was able to leave, but Zinardi stayed there to have an operation done on his legs. Unfortunately things did not go to well, with Zinardi having to get both legs amputated from the knees down. This was a sad day for motorsport. It is sad to see a driver leave motorsport in such circumstances.

Alex is currently in a medically-induced coma. But could be taken out at any time.

Alex is taken out of coma. he is in a "stable but serious" condition.
